Australia already has some of the toughest gun laws in the world.
- Licensed firearm owners are farmers, sport shooters, hunters and recreational users who rely on firearms for legitimate, lawful purposes, and they do so responsibly.
- Those proposing gun law changes are unfairly targeting people who already obey the law, while failing to address the real causes of violent extremism and criminal behaviour.
Public safety policy must focus on the root causes of violence, including extremist ideology, radicalisation, and the failure of governments to act decisively against hate-fuelled threats.
Punishing law-abiding firearm owners for these failures is neither fair nor effective.
These proposed changes will not stop terrorists or criminals.
They will, however:
- Increase red tape and costs for compliant firearm owners.
- Undermine farmers’ ability to manage pests and protect livestock.
- Restrict sport shooting, hunting and regional traditions.
- Penalise Australians who have done nothing wrong.
We support sensible and proportionate reforms that genuinely improve community safety, such as a national firearms register and ensuring firearms licences are limited to Australian citizens.
But we strongly oppose blanket reforms that strip rights from responsible Australians without making the community safer.
- Farmers need firearms to operate their businesses.
- Sport shooters and hunters follow strict rules and contribute to regional economies.
- Law-abiding citizens should not be scapegoated for government policy failures.
This is about common sense.
This is about fairness.
This is about targeting criminals and extremists, not compliant Australians.
